チャップリン映画初の完全トーキー作品である『独裁者』は、チャップリンがアドルフ・ヒトラーの独裁政治を批判した作品と言われています。
ヒトラーとナチズムに対して非難と風刺をしつつ、ヨーロッパにおけるユダヤ人の苦況をコミカルに描いた『独裁者』は、1940年にアメリカで初公開されましたが、ナチの戦争とはいまだ無縁であった当時のアメリカでは、この演説は賛否両論であったそうです。
ユダヤ人に関することは当時のハリウッドではタブーであり、ナチスの恐怖を大っぴらに誇張していて不謹慎だとする意見や右翼勢力の立場からは共産主義者の陰謀だとするなど批判も多かったそうですが、現在では後世に残したい「歴史上最も感動的なスピーチ」と呼ばれています。
